Vasist Muni Memorial School

Introduction:

Late in 1921 Swami Basisiht Muni founded the Maqere Indian School now called Vasist Muni Memorial School with the help of volunteers.

Environment:

Vasist Muni Memorial School is located on Kings Highway between Ba town and Tavua. It is in Mangere village near the seaside. The school is surrounded by beautifull hills. The nearest town is Tavua. Tavua is a small and quiet town which has an abundance of tropical fruits.

We also need help with fundraising to build better classrooms.

If you would like to come and share your skills with us for a week, a month or 6 months, we will welcome you into our small family, teach you about our culture and give you a rich experience of the Fijian way of life.

Management

Didi Ananda Kalyanbrata Surendra Sing is the project director . He is a very friendly person who is warm and hospitable. He speaks very good English and will make you feel at home right away. He is also open to change and new ideas as far as the management of his project is concerned.

The temporary volunteer coordinator for this project is Didi Manika. She hopes that this will be a duty that one of the first volunteers to this project may like to take over , once they are established at the project.

Accommodation:

Volunteers stay in a house near the school. One room has two single beds as shown in the photo. Food is provided.

Two volunteers at any one time.

Bookings are suspended until the board of trustees has come up with suitable proviso for volunteers. We hope in the near future to be able to send volunteers to this project.

Who do we need?

We need one or two volunteers who would like to come spend time with our children. The volunteer should have a love for children, good character and be able to act as a role model.

Your job as a volunteer

Role of Volunteer
* to teach English, maths, computing, science, history, geography or any other academic or non-academic subjects or activities.
* to train the teachers to plan and teach creative lessons
* to play games with or organize activities for the children during recreation time.
* Teach them about your life and share theirs.
* to help us find ways to fundraise for a better building for our school
*options available for fruit farming-oranges-mangoes,pawpaws, melon, pineaple,etc
*other activities could include music, cooking and baking classes and gardening.

What to expect:

We would like a volunteer who can help train the teachers how to make lessons more interesting, using playful methods.

If you are a kindergarten or lower primary teacher with a creative mind and the capacity to work wonders on a shoestring budget, we will welcome you with open arms. We would like a second person to teach English to the children.
